Optical
zoom
Changing the focal length of a camera by adjusting
the physical zoom lens. All zoom lenses in film cameras and digital
single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are optical zoom. Digital
point-and-shoot cameras as well as consumer and prosumer video
camcorders have optical zoom, but they also have digital zoom. |
|
Digital is
Software Zoom
At the telephoto side of the camera, the
computer takes over and interpolates the results. For example, a
still camera may have 3x optical zoom in the lens, but can process
the image with its internal computer to 10x. Depending on the camera
and subject matter, the software-created digital zoom can be quite
acceptable or mediocre. |
|
The Higher
the Optical, the Better
The higher the optical zoom, the better the
results. In a still camera, an optical zoom of 10x or more is called
a "superzoom" lens. Optical zoom is widely used in surveillance
camera, espacially high definition camera, which can provide sharp
and real image quality. |

How PoE benefits IP surveillance? |
|
In addition to data communications between the two devices,
Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) enables an Ethernet Switch/Hub to power a
remote device over an existing LAN cable. Without PoE, any remote
device needs to be powered independently. Typically, device power is
derived from an AC-DC adapter or at board level inside the device.
This adds cost and requires locating the device near a source of AC
power.
Device installation is further complicated by different safety
codes, AC voltages and wall plugs around the world. PoE avoids these
problems by supplying low-voltage DC power directly to the Powered
Device (PD) from the Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) that is located
in the Ethernet Switcher or mid-span Hub and eliminates the
complexity of AC power sources.
To ensure that all equipment is protected and devices operate
properly when connected, the IEEE established a universal standard
(IEEE802.3af). This specifies the power requirements of the PSE and
the PD, and the communication protocol between the two -regardless
of manufacturer or configuration.
Multipix built in the standard PoE in
the box IP cameras, and nonstandard PoE in the dome cameras to
simplify the camera installation procedure and reduce the cost of
the solution. |

CASE STUDIES |

Dubai HTC School |
|
Providing students with a safe learning environment with Multipix IP
camera
Mission
HTC High School in Dubai, UAB., wanted a security system that would
help prevent crisis situations and would create a safer, more
productive environment for teachers and students. In addition, the
school needed to find a solution that could be installed, operated
and maintained without becoming a major financial drain on the
school’s budget.
Solution
Vanguard, a company specializing in security systems for schools,
installed 37 Multipix IP cameras around the school, allowing the
principal, teachers and police officers to view live images of
school grounds via the Internet. Vanguard employees also observe
school grounds from the company’s real-time remote monitoring
station during off-hours, eliminating the need for a nighttime
security guard.

Result
With the network video system in place, fights and crime in the
school have become nearly non-existent, and teachers and students
alike have a strengthened sense of safety and security on campus.
Adding
up for security
HTC High School, located in a suburban town of Dubai, would not be
considered a high-crime school. However, with national research
showing that school crime has become increasingly violent in recent
years, the administration at HTC High School wanted to do everything
it could to prevent a crisis situation and protect its students and
teachers.
“Studies prove that crimes and violent acts generally occur when
students are crowded together such as between classes or at
lunchtime,” said Osama I. Qafiti, President of Vanguard. “Students
typically think that no one is watching them when they are in a
crowd, and most of the time, they are right. The best way to prevent
crime on campus is to let students know someone is monitoring their
behavior.”
Vanguard was hired to design and install a security system that
would enable the principal, teachers and security officials to
monitor the school from anywhere on the campus and from remote
locations. With the new network video system in place, most areas of
HTC High School, such as hallways, classrooms and entrances, can be
viewed and monitored at one time. Speakers were even installed near
some of the cameras so that the administration can speak to
students, letting them know they are being watched.
In
addition, the new camera and Axis video server system is helping
Canton High School save money on security. Vanguard’s remote
monitoring station uses the Internet to view real-time images of the
school during off hours, eliminating the need for full-time security
officers on campus. If there is a problem, the company can notify
the police directly or can startle intruders by speaking to them
through the speaker system.
Cameras equal safety
Since
HTC High School has installed the network video system, students and
faculty alike say they feel much safer now than they did before the
system was in place. In fact, one Canton High School senior has
claimed that fights are nearly non-existent now because
students who fight are not able to later deny their involvement.
“Now you can’t get into a fight and say that you weren’t in it
because the cameras saw you there,” she said. “It’s better that they
have the cameras – I feel personally
more safe to be here.”

Mission
Palmas, capital of the state of
Tocantins,
is still a building site. It is the newest city in Brazil and is
known as the "capital of opportunity", attracting thousands of
people who, in search of work, have migrated to this new economic
frontier of the country. It is within this climate of growth that
tourism is seen as a factor to be exploited. With its natural
beauties still intact, kilometres of river beaches, waterfalls and
ecological reserves, the capital is located in the geographical
centre of Tocantins and forms part of the Palmas Tourist Region,
together with four other municipalities - Lajeado, Miracema do
Tocantins, Monte do Carmo and Porto Nacional.
For now this young city
was faced with escalating crime in the Central Business District.
They determined to install a video surveillance system as a Public
Safety project, with the aim of making the streets safer and thereby
promoting tourism and protecting the interests of local businesses.
The Municipality wanted to apply current technology to emulate
successful projects carried out in major cities, but wanted to do so
without massive capital expenditure.
Solution
The system chosen consists of MPWEB Pro management software and
Multipix encoders and network cameras. The additional hardware like
MP-POE, and MPEvent Events Programming Center and MPXP Video
Streaming software have made it possible to safeguard the existing
cameras, thus minimizing problems associated with cabling and
installation. Check the below pictures about this project.

Result
Within two weeks of commissioning, crime in the monitored area
dropped by 30% (unofficial police statistics), and more than halved
over the next three months. Public perception of the area has
improved significantly, and the project is seen as an example for
other towns to follow
A security partnership
This
Tocantins
project was envisaged from conception as a partnership between local
government, local businesses and the residents, with a common
interest in reducing crime in the area. The control room today is
monitored by personnel private security firms, the Fire Station, and
Brug- B Farm Watch (a citizens’ crime prevention group). The cameras
are located on private business properties, and the control room is
in local government offices. The system currently comprises three
MP-708 Network Dome Cameras that provide 360º coverage and an 26x
zoom to home in on events, and four MP-200/300 fixed cameras
monitoring high risk pay points. The dome cameras, with their
ability to work down to 0.01 lux, deliver clear images with
available light under nearly all conditions.
The eyes of the law
Currently the video monitoring underpins a rapid response to
incidents, and provides government with valuable input in
identifying and pursuing criminals.
